Equipment Maintenance

Proper maintenance of grain bins and drying equipment can go a long way toward improving energy efficiency [10,11]. For example:

• Inspect drying equipment to ensure peak performance. This includes checking bearings, belts, etc. Consult the owner’s manual on your equipment for a maintenance schedule.
• If equipment is aging, consider replacing it with dryers and fans that will be most efficient for the application. Consider centrifugal fans for efficient air movement through grain depths exceeding about 18 feet.
• Keep fans and burners clean. Also, check that regulators and sensors are in good working order. Burners should have a blue flame, indicating complete combustion.
• Be sure airflow around the fan is not blocked and no air is leaking from the bottom seal in drying and cooling bins.
• Inspect and clean drying floors.
• Check grain moisture meters for accuracy.
